A) ABOUT US: –

The central library of the College of Agriculture, Pune was established in 1908. It is one of the oldest agricultural libraries in India. It has a seating capacity for 550 students in the 4 different reading areas.

The primary mission of the library is to support the education and research programmes by providing physical and intellectual access to information consistent with the present and the anticipated educational and research functions of the College. Library aims to develop a community of the College.

The collection of the library includes books, journals, e – journals, e – books, reports, maps, conference proceedings, CD-ROM data bases, video cassettes, etc. The library have an archives of more than 135 print journals in different disciplines. In addition, over 5000 journals are accessible on line due to CeRA and J-Gate subscription. The total holding of the library exceeds 60,000 documents. The library offers services such as reference service, user guidance service, circulation service including inter library loan and document delivery service, Xerox service, internet, CD- ROM search service, etc.

Library automation / Computerization

The Library is using the “KOHA – LMS”, an integrated, multi user, library management software package that supports all in-house operations of the Library. “KOHA – LMS”, consists of modules on acquisition, cataloguing, circulation, serial control, article indexing and OPAC. Library automation / computerization activities are completed. This centre is equipped with 42 computers having internet facility. Three Inverters of 10 KVA capacity have been installed in the Centre. Besides, there are two laser printers, e-mail server, CD-mirror server for storage of VCDs, DVDs, etc. The software enables to search multiple CDs & DVDs together with a single search command for comprehensive search. These products are searchable under network environment by all the users simultaneously.

Audio Visual and Multimedia support

The Library has one television set, one VCR and 25 video- cassettes on agricultural and allied subjects. This facility was started from 2000 with the help of University library. The educational video-cassettes on agriculture are made available to the users.

Shetkari Dalan

This facility is specially created / developed for farmers. The special collection of books, reports, newspaper clippings in Marathi language on specific crops are purchased & made available to the farmers.

Unique instructional material

Special collection of books and other documents procured for competitive examinations such as ICAR entrance exam, JRF, SRF, NET, MPSC, UPSC, & other competitive examinations developed and made available to the users.

According to Haider (2004), “Libraries are central organs in a university and play a significant role in achieving the due objectives of higher education”. Similarly, GIPE library too has played an important role of supporting higher education and research for more than a century.

Library Rules –

  1. The member is issued certain number of Borrower’s Ticket (BT) for borrowing books. The BTs are NOT TRANSFERABLE and member is responsible for any loss of book issued against his BT. On loss of BT member shall have to pay a fine of Rs.10/- per BT.
  2. If the book issued to the member is not returned on or before the due date, a late fee of Rs.1/- per day per book is charged. In case of book issued for overnight is not returned next day, the late fee of Rs.2/- is charged per day per book.
  3. Member should not mark, underline or highlight the words or sentences in the book by pencil or by ink.
  4. The member is responsible for any damage caused to the book during the period it remains with him
  5. Borrower shall examine the condition of book before getting it issued in his name. The last borrower will be held responsible for any damage to the book.
  6. Do not pull the book from the shelf by holding its back cover. To take out a book from the shelf, first push back two or three adjacent books and then hold firmly the needed book at the middle of the spine and pull it lightly
  7. The book can be renewed for further period, if it is not required by any reader.

The library has framed certain rules for circulation of books so that all the members will have an equal opportunity to get the books. The membership is opened to bonafide students, faculty members and ministerial staff. Members from different categories are entitled to get issued the books as follows:

  1. Under Graduate Students   :      1 Books for 7 Days
  2. Post Graduate Students     :       2 Books for 7 Days
  3. PhD Students              :       2 Books for 15 Days
  4. Teaching Staff             :       10 Books for a semester
  5. Ministerial Staff          :      1 Book for 8 days
