The horticulture research in the state has been in progress since the inception of department of agriculture in the year 1902. The section was part of College of Agriculture, Pune which was established in 1907. In view of constant demand from growers for advanced technical knowledge in the field of horticulture, a separate section was established with Dr. G.S. Cheema as the first horticulturist to the government of Maharashtra in the year 1921 and Ganeshkhind botanical garden was transferred to this section for experimentation of fruit crops. The Professor was assigned with task of teaching, research and extension in subject for the state.
In the early 20s, considerable work was done towards improvement of fruits and vegetables both by selection and hybridization. Several agro-techniques were standardized for different fruits and vegetables. Realizing the importance of post harvest technology in horticulture the section did considerable pioneer work in this line. The experience gained by Dr. G.S. Cheema as research scholar of empire marketing board in 1931 helped in formulation of cold storage research scheme.
A full fledged nursery at Modibaug, horticulture section was established in 1921 to supply genuine planting material to farmers. Initially, the subject was offered for UG courses as one of major subjects in the B.Sc Agriculture curriculum. The achievements of horticulture section laid foundation for PG teaching.
